More than 90 per cent of South Australia’s cultural collections are held in storage at any given time and rotate on display through the state’s cultural institutions including The Art Gallery of SA, South Australian Museum, History Trust of SA and State Library of SA.
Included in this is South Australia’s significant Aboriginal artefacts – the largest and most comprehensive collection of Aboriginal cultural material in the world.
Existing storage facilities are either approaching or exceeding capacity. To ensure the collections are protected and preserved for future generations, the State government is investing $86.5 million in a purpose-built storage facility.
The new facility will store the collection in temperature and humidity-controlled environments, with integrated pest control, robust security and specialised fire services. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by December 2023.
